How Often and Why
On the Sound Shore we recommend cleaning a Sub-Zero condenser every three to four months, more often than the manual's six-month guideline. Salt air off Long Island Sound carries fine grit that packs the condenser fins faster than inland dust, and homes with pets load them faster still. A clogged condenser forces the compressor to run longer and hotter, which is the single most common reason a unit starts running warm.
The Right Way to Do It
The condenser sits behind the upper grille on most built-ins. With the grille off, a soft brush and a vacuum with a narrow attachment clear the fins without bending them. Work top to bottom, avoid a stiff wire brush, and never pack debris deeper into the coil. If the unit has been running warm and long between cycles, a cleaning often restores normal behavior on its own, and if it does not, the fan motor or defrost system is the next thing we read.
